AFRICA CLIMATE COLLABORATIVE AT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY

Climate change is one of the greatest and most complex global development challenges to date with Africa being the most vulnerable continent to the impacts of Climate change. This is because most of the population depends on natural resources for their livelihoods and these are susceptible to its impact. Higher education institutions hold a unique position in advancing Africa’s resilience by producing scientific evidence, fostering innovative solutions, and nurturing a new generation of leaders equipped to drive a climate-resilient future. It is against this background that in April 2025, Mastercard Foundation partnered with Makerere University to implement the Africa Climate Collaborative. The Collaborative is being delivered through a consortium of three other Universities including University of Ghana, University of Cape Town and University of Cambridge. The efforts of the partner universities are coordinated by the Association of African Universities (AAU) - the backbone organization for the collaborative. This collaboration leverages the unique strengths and expertise of each partner to empower young people, especially women, to lead Africa to climate resilience and climate-positive growth.

The Africa Climate Collaborative seeks to promote climate-positive growth in Africa by strengthening higher education institutions to equip young Africans with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and resources to effectively respond to climate change while creating sustainable solutions for people and the planet, driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and green job creation.
