50 Master’s Students Awarded Scholarships Under the Africa Climate Collaborative at Makerere University

The Africa Climate Collaborative at Makerere University, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, has awarded scholarships to 50 young people to pursue Master’s studies in the 2026/2027 academic year.  The 50 scholars include 34 females and 16 males. The new cohort brings the total number of Master’s scholars supported by the programme to 85 out of the 250 scholarships planned over eight years. The programme seeks to develop young African climate leaders, researchers and innovators.

Africa Climate Collaborative Scholar Among Winning Team at University of Cape Town Climate Risk Training

Bruce Ayesigye, a Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering Scholar under the Africa Climate Collaborative at Makerere University, completed the University of Cape Town’s Climate System Analysis Group (UCT-CSAG) Short Course on Navigating Climate Risk held from 22–26 June 2026. The training strengthened participants’ knowledge of climate science, risk assessment, adaptation planning and decision-making. Bruce’s multidisciplinary team won the final group project for developing innovative adaptation pathways to address agricultural drought in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. 

Scam Alert: Master's and PhD Scholarship Applicants Warned

The Africa Climate Collaborative (ACC) at Makerere University has cautioned scholarship applicants against fraudsters falsely claiming they can influence or guarantee scholarship awards. The Collaborative emphasises that the 2026/2027 scholarship selection process is still ongoing and no scholarships have been awarded. Applicants should ignore requests for payment or promises of admission and rely only on the official Program's communication channels, including registered telephone numbers and email addresses.

Stakeholders of Mastercard Foundation Initiatives at Makerere University Convene to Review Progress and Strengthen Collaboration

The Mastercard Foundation-supported initiatives at Makerere University convened the 2nd Partnership Development Breakfast Meeting on 9th July 2026 in Kampala to review progress, strengthen collaboration, and explore opportunities for advancing education, research, innovation, and youth empowerment. The engagement brought together university leaders, government officials, development partners, private-sector actors, and stakeholders to discuss initiatives, including the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme, Africa Climate Collaborative, and e-Learning Initiative.

Africa Climate Collaborative at Makerere University Launches Youth Skilling Program to Catalyse Enterprise Development

The Africa Climate Collaborative at Makerere University, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, has launched an inclusive Youth Skilling Program to equip young people with climate-smart, market-driven skills. Beginning with a pilot cohort of 50 youth from Lwengo, Rakai, and Yumbe districts, the initiative focuses on the poultry value chain to promote entrepreneurship, employment, and climate resilience. The program targets young people aged 18–35 who have completed Senior Four but have not attended university, with applications open at no cost through official ACC channels.

Master’s Scholars Engage Lwengo and Rakai Communities to Inform Research Conceptualisation

Master’s Scholars under the Africa Climate Collaborative (ACC) at Makerere University conducted a reconnaissance visit to Lwengo and Rakai districts to inform their academic research engagements. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, the scholars interacted with district officials, farmer groups, and communities to understand climate-related challenges affecting local livelihoods. The engagements highlighted challenges including prolonged dry spells, invasive water weeds, saline water, poor waste management, pests, and diseases.

Late Sylas Ruhweza Atwooki’s Life of Service and Leadership

 Sylas Ruhweza Atwooki was a dedicated leader, education advocate, and community servant whose life was marked by service, mentorship, and youth empowerment. Through his leadership roles at Makerere University, the Tooro Kingdom, and the Mastercard Foundation Alumni Network, he left a lasting impact on many lives. His legacy of transformative leadership and commitment to uplifting others will be fondly remembered.
