Portfolio: - Program Administrator in Charge of Youth Skilling

Profile

Dr. Deogratius Luyima is an Agricultural Chemist and Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science and Land Use Management at Makerere University, with expertise in soil and environmental chemistry, soil fertility management, biochar technologies, and climate-smart agriculture. His research focuses on the use of biochar and other amendments derived from biodegradable wastes, including compost, bokashi, and ash, to improve agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impacts. Specifically, he investigates how these amendments can enhance soil health and crop performance, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and ammonia (NH), and immobilize environmental pollutants such as heavy metals and chemicals of emerging concern, thereby promoting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural systems.

Dr. Luyima has contributed to several international research collaborations, including projects on nutrient circularity, sustainable manure management, and biochar applications. His research seeks practical solutions to improve agricultural productivity while mitigating the effects of climate change. He also mentors postgraduate students and actively supports the development of evidence-based policies for sustainable agriculture and environmental resilience.

At the Africa Climate Collaborative, Dr. Luyima leads the design and implementation of youth skilling programmes, equipping young people with practical green entrepreneurship and climate-resilient livelihood skills that contribute to sustainable development across Africa.
